Al Khamsa has taken a new approach to identifying Al Khamsa Arabian horses whose lineage has become endangered. This information will now be marked directly on the pedigree of either a stallion or mare of breeding age(1).
Endangerments are marked for Tail Male for stallions only(2), Tail Female for mares only(3) and Ancestral Scarcity for mares and stallions(4).
We chose to use standard classifications for the levels of endangerment:
- Critically Endangered
- Endangered
- Threatened
- Watching
The number of offspring needed for each level is defined as follows:
Tail Male & Tail Female
- Critically Endangered Offspring 1 to 20
- Endangered Offspring 21 to 40
- Threatened Offspring 41 to 80
- Watching Offspring 81 to 160
Ancestral Scarcity
- Critically Endangered Offspring 1 to 50
- Endangered Offspring 51 to 100
- Threatened Offspring 101 to 150
- Watching Offspring 151 to 200
Tail Male endangerment is only checked for stallions. Tail Female endangerment is only checked for mares.

A pedigree's tail male, tail female and/or ancestral scarcity may change over time as new horses are added to the roster.
Example of Tail Male Endangerment with no Ancestral Scarcity:
This horse has a Threatened foundation horse in the tail male poisition. And there were no other foundation horses in his pedigree that were found to be endangered.
The next example shows an example of Tail Female Endangerment along with Ancestral Scarcity:
Ancestral Scarcity are those Al Khamsa foundation horses at the end of each line of the pedigriee except Tail Female for a mare or except Tail Male for a stallion.
By default a maximum of 12 horses will be displayed. To see the full list you must click on the Ancestral Scarcity label. It will be shown as a scrolling list.
The final example is an Al Khamsa Arabian without either Tail Male or Tail Female endangerment but with Ancestral Scarcity.
As you can see from this piece of the pedigree, this mare has 6 ancestors that fit our definition of being or becoming scarce with 5 of the 6 being Critically Endangered. So it is very important this mare be bred.
If you do not wish to see the Ancestral Scarcity on the pedigree simply click on the X and the heading will change to “View Ancestral Scarcity”. You may wish to do this if the list of Ancestral Scarcity exceeds the length of the Ancestral Elements before printing your pedigree.
When the pedigree is printed, if the Ancestral Scarcity is shown, the full length of it will be part of the printed pedigree.
Definitions
(1)Breeding Age Range - for stallions the current calendar year- 30 inclusive, for mares the current calendar year - 25 inclusive.
(2)Tail Male – Following the top most line of a pedigree back to the last stallion at the beginning of the male line , a male foundation horse.
(3)Tail Female – Following the bottom most line of a pedigree back to the last mare at the beginning of the female line, a female foundation horse.
(4)Ancestral Scarcity – Every Al Khamsa foundation horse, male or female, at the beginning of every line in the pedigree other than Tail Male or Tail Female.
