A Foundation Horse

Bred by Mubarak al-Khalifah of Bahrain with Shafi Ibn Shab'an of the Qahtan. Given by Mubarak al-Khalifah to Mushwat Ibn Shab'an Ibn 'Uwaydh of al-'Assim of the Qahtan. Imported prior to 1853 to Egypt for Abbas Pasha.

By a Dahman Kunayhir stallion [by a Kuhaylan Ajuz of Ibn Jallab of al-Murrah (or Kuhaylan Jallabi) of al-Khalifah] out of a dark bay Dahmah Shahwaniyah mare of the marbat of al-Najib owned by Ibn 'Uwaydh of the Qahtan and bred by 'Abd Allah al Khalifah.

NOTES: The above information (except for the dates, which are Al Khamsa estimates, and the name of Hajlah) that appears to describe the Al Khamsa Foundation Horse called Hajlah is from the translation of the Abbas Pasha manuscript [Sherif & Forbis, 1993, pp271-275]. The pedigree of Hajlah's dam is continued as follows: by Ibn umm Sura (by a Kuhaylan 'Ajuz of Ibn Jallab, or Kuhaylan Jallabi), the stallion of Mubarak al-Khalifah, out of a bay mare by the Kuhaylan 'Ajuz stallion of Ibn 'Umar of the Bani Hajr of the Qahtan out of a Dahmah Shahwaniyah mare of the marbat of al-Najib of the Bani Husayn. [Also see Talqah (AP)]

Lady Anne Blunt's translation of this section of the Arabic testimonies is published in the same book [Sherif & Forbis, 1993, pp678-683]. The Blunt translation is incomplete and not as clear, describing the sire only as "Ibn El Jellabi" rather than the specific Dahman Kunayhir son of a Jallabi shown in the Sherif/Forbis translation.

Translations of lists of Abbas Pasha horses published by Prince Mohamed Aly Tewfik [p89] confirms the acquisition of a bay Dahmah al-Najib mare, "mother the mare of Sami: owner Ibn-'Uwaytah, father Duhayman."

The 1932 certified pedigree for *Bint Serra I from the stud of Prince Kamal al-Din shows the bay Dahmah Shahwaniyah of the marbat of al-Najib owned by Ibn 'Uwaydh of the Qahtan, here called Hajlah, as the dam of both Gharran (APS) and Jerboa (APS).

The names Hajlah and Dahmeh Nejiba I are from Raswan Index entries #1830, #2232 and #3299. These entries show Hajlah as by Duhayman, a Dahman Shahwan al-Najib of the Qahtan out of the mare of Sami, a Dahmah Shahwaniyah of the marbat of al-Najib owned by Sami of the Qahtan. Entry #1830 also shows Hajlah (AP) as the dam of El Dahma (APS), but the 40-year gap between Hajlah and El Dahma (foaled c1880) appears to make that impossible.
