NURA EL KEBIRA (APS)

A Foundation Horse

A Dahmah Shahwaniyah of the marbat of al-Najib (or Dahmah Najibah) imported by 1855 to Egypt, probably for Abbas Pasha. Later in the stud of Ali Pasha Sharif.

NOTES: The above information (except for the dates, which are Al Khamsa estimates) is from Lady Anne Blunt's handwritten herd book entry for Feysul [Upton, 1980, p8]: "Nura, a grey Dahmeh Nejiba (original mare)." Colin Pearson [1988, pXXXI] quotes a Sheykh Obeyd herd book entry as saying "Query is 'Nura' the daughter of the Dahmeh Nejiba of Khalil el Hajry. I doubt it as if so Ibn Nura is more inbred than I fancy Ali P Sherif would have fancied." Peter Upton [1980, p108] adds, evidently quoting Lady Anne, "According to Mohammed Salame the old Syce Basha, this mare was obtained from or through one Mustafa Effendi Nuri..., not yet discovered whether Mustafa got her from Abbas I collection or whether the Collection got her through him." It appears from these quotes that Lady Anne was not sure about the information for Nura.

According to entry #7463 in the Raswan Index, Nura El Kebira was also called Shakra (meaning chestnut), her sire was Shalul, a Dahman Shahwan al-Najib of the Bani Husayn, her dam a Dahmah Shahwaniyah of Khalil al-Hajri of the Bani Hajr. Entries #7465 and #7095 show her as of the al-Najib family.

At present, there is no way to determine whether the Nura of Lady Anne Blunt is the same mare as Nura El Kebira of Carl Raswan. [See also *Shahwan and Shalfa (AP)]
