A Pre-Registration Horse
A Kuhaylan 'Ajuz al-Harqan (or Kuhaylan Harqan).
NOTES: The 1932 certified pedigree for *Bint Serra I from Prince Kamal al-Din describes the sire of Aziz as Harkan, by Zobeyni out of Harka, as does the extended pedigree on p12a of the RAS History. No breeder, date or color is shown. The date is an Al Khamsa estimate.
Translation [Al-Dahdah, 6/05] of an Arabic document [described as a facsimile of the original, Upton: 1989, p58] which appears to be the pedigrees of the first three purchases of Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt from Ali Pasha Sharif and in Ali Pasha Sharif's own hand, adds some further detail. In describing the sire of Aziz (APS), it says "Harqan (sire) of Aziz is Kuhaylan Abu Maaref ... from Nejd, son of the Saqlawi Jidran of the strains of the Semniat [Samni, or Zubayni] from the horses of Abbas Pasha." Depending on the relationship of the Kuhaylan Abu Maaref to the Kuhaylan Harkan, this may be a change of family, or marbat. [See also under Harka (AP) for further information.]
Lady Anne Blunt, in a herd book entry for Bint Nura (BLT), says that Harkan was a grey Kuhaylan 'Ajuz of the Harkan strain by Zobeyni and out of Harka [Bowling, see p123]. Raswan Index entry #3526 describes Harkan as a Kuhaylan 'Ajuz stallion of Abbas Pasha, sired by Zobeyni and out of Harka.
One of Lady Anne's journal entries gives a slightly different story. "Mutlak asked me if there had been a horse within my knowledge named Harkan at A.P.S.'s and I told him 'yes.' He explained that long ago the Sherif [Ali Pasha Sharif] had come with Abbas Pasha's agent an Agha to the Ajman and had also met ed Duish (Muteyr Sheykh) asking for a stallion, and for a Krushieh. The Ajman Sheykh brought a Keh. Harkan horse..." [J&C, 12/31/1907]. This entry implies that Harkan was a desert bred stallion imported by Ali Pasha Sharif, rather than a stallion bred by Abbas Pasha from desert-bred parents.
